• Instagram: The fun photo sharing application

    Instagram – I love it!

Instagram is a photo sharing app that allows you edit photos on the fly and post directly to social media. It is a lot of fun and one more way to connect with that you know and don’t know in Social Media land. It is also a fast, simple, quick and creative way to add “life” and groovy digital effects to your photos. All of a sudden, any photo you take can look like a true work of art.

Get it on your iPhone, iPad or IPod touch

Currently Instagram is only available for iPhones, iPads and IPod touches and is distributed via the Apple App Store but it will soon be available for Androids too.  Right now there’s over 15 million users using Instagram to share their pics and stay connected. And did I mention it’s free too!

    Instagram is interactive

The thing with Instagram is that you’re interacting with people. You follow other people and they can follow you back. It’s pretty easy to find other people you already know, because you can see which friends are already using Instagram and it’s easy to invite friends who aren’t using it yet.

When you “love”, “like” or make a comment on someone else’s photo, they get a notification and a little conversation can be started under the pic which others can join.  Every day you can easily see new pics that have been uploaded from your followers and they’ll see yours in their photo stream too.

Photos can also be posted and shared over other Social Media platforms too – Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Flickr, Tumblr and Posterous. You can show your “love” by liking other people’s pics too. You can also give your photos a title and add hashtags in your comments.

Easily add effects to your photos

So here are two pics. The first is the original version. The 2nd pic is one I added some Instagram effect to.

It’s as simple as that! Just snap a pic and then add the effects you want and then share!

How to get started with Instagram

All you need to do to get started is Go to the App Store or the App feature on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and look up “Instagram”. Download the app and set up your account by choosing a username and uploading a profile pic. You also get to put a little blurb about yourself and your website. You can see mine in the pic below -

I have to say, there are some amazing pics being shared on Instagram.  And yes, of course celebrities are in on it too. Okay, okay, I have to admit that I am following Rosie O’Donnell, Kim Kardashian and Jamie Oliver. Where else are you going to get to see these people sharing their everyday photos? And how could I not resist looking at the pics of Jamie’s food all freshly prepared and a nice casual photo as fresh as it comes out of the oven!!

So, join in the fun, make some new friends and connections, follow family and loved ones and stay in touch. Not to mention turning your pics into something a little out of the ordinary with one easy click of a button!

Great article Toni-Louise. Some of my friends are Instagram addicts and I’ve seen Instragram photos shared on Twitter – and now you’ve inspired me to try it for myself.

    Cheers

It’s so much fun Mel!! I think the hardest part is working out what photos to start taking and then just keep snapping away and have fun changing them and share away!!

Look forward to seeing your Instagram pics!

Thanks for sharing this Toni-Louise. I’ve heard about Instagram but had discounted it because I don’t have an iPhone. But after reading your post, I will try the app for iPad! And being able to follow Jamie Oliver is an added bonus!

Oh so true Vanessa. You can of course still access Instagram from your iPad and have just as much fun and following Jamie Oliver and seeing his beautiful home cooked fare is an added bonus :-)
