You have a website, you want to promote it. In terms of social media there are plenty of options for networking, building relationships and giving value. At this moment in time Twitter is still one of the most widely used and useful applications in this space.
If you are ready to discover the potential of Twitter, you are in for a treat; it has never been so easy to strike up a conversation with likeminded, funny and interesting people all over the world.
So where do you start? How do you make the most of the time you invest in Twitter?
Here are some quick tips that will get you up and running in no time.
Don’t be an egg!
There are two areas where you can personalise Twitter.
- Your profile which includes an image, a 160 character bio, your location and your website. Take some time to complete your profile before you get going and review it every few months to make sure it is current. It is the first thing people look at when they see your tweets and if they like what they see they may visit your website.
- Your background which is the space behind the information on your Twitter page, this is less important but a good opportunity to present more information and branding for when people actually visit your profile. Unfortunately there is no right size for design as it depends on the resolution of the screen of the viewer, but here is a handy post on customisation.
Follow and be followed
The more people you follow, the more people will follow you, so make an effort to follow people that you would like to connect with.
- with similar interests
- in the location you look after
- who inspire you
- who make you laugh
- who are interesting and useful in your industry
- who fit the profile of your ideal customer.
Unless there is a reason not to, follow back the people who follow you and while you are at it, start a conversation!
Be interested and interesting
Twitter is like a networking event. You get a chance to share small talk with a variety of different people. Some may be familiar to you, some may not, just like a physical event the etiquette is to join in conversations, be interested in other people and look for common ground.
Create tweets that will be of value to your followers. Things like information, links or observations are all good ways to be useful or start a conversation.
The most effective way to get to know your followers is to visit their website and see what they are all about and make sure that you let them know if you appreciate their content.
Twitter is a social network, it is a chance to share, connect and have a laugh with likeminded people. Go into it with an open attitude and you will should yourself having conversations that inspire you, create opportunities for you or make you laugh out loud and of course bring attention to your work and your website. Make the most of it, bring your personality and friendliness to the equation and you may be surprised at what comes as a result.
A lot of people ask me how to automate the posting of tweets. Although nothing compares to real time conversation, it can be beneficial to add automated tweets to your marketing mix. Automated tweets will help you maintain the consistency of your tweets when you are too busy. It isn’t appropriate for every kind of account so have a good think about what you want to achieve with your tweets.
Tweet Adder is a great little Twitter automation tool that helps you automate certain processes including the following and un-following of people as well as posting tweets. Upload a list of valuable tweets, choose a frequency to post and turn it on and it will work in the background posting your tweets each day.
